ACSSW's Beginning

It all started at the ACES Conference in Chicago, IL in the fall of 2017. Dr. Frances "Fran" McClain attended Dr. Robert Zeglin's session on sexuality competencies. Fran had reached out to Dr. Zeglin earlier in the year after she had read one of his articles on sexuality she was using in the human sexuality class she and her wife were co-teaching in the Counseling Psychology Department at The Chicago School. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Zeglin had moved teach in the Counseling program at the University of North Florida and they had lost touch. It was in that session that the possibility of a human sexuality division in the American Counseling Association was posed. Throughout the rest of the ACES conference Fran continued to gather contact information of people interested in developing a human sexuality division in ACA. Fran then contacted Angela "Angie" Schubert, who was then the Sexual Wellness In Counseling (SWIC) moderator to see if she was interested in joining the group. Angie enthusiastically signed on to the team and contacted Wynn Dupkoski, who was the founder of SWIC. In addition to those early members was also Tonya Epps and Melissa Vandenberg.

Beginning the first of 2018 the team started making plans for a human sexuality division in ACA. Unfortunately, or in some ways it was fortunate the team was unaware of the amount of work this new association was going to entail.  However, by the time of the 2018 ACA Conference in Atlanta, GA the Association of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness (ACSSW)  had been born! ACA generously gave ACSSW space to have its first official meeting and the newly appointed officers spoke to a packed room providing information about this new, exciting organization.
